My name is Bianca Elena Chirica, and I am a second-year student in Romania. I participated in the
JobTrust program during my first year of university, driven by a sincere desire to step out of my comfort
zone. I wanted to challenge myself, experience working with people from different cultures, become
more attentive to the needs of others, and broaden my horizons both personally and professionally.
The recruitment process was full of emotions. Although I was confident in English, I worried that I might
not manage. The interview, however, was a warm and encouraging conversation that gave me the
confidence I needed, I knew I was on the right path.
Then came Greece. Agia Pelagia was more than just a workplace; it was a state of mind. The country was
full of color, greenery, and life, with incredibly welcoming people. During the two and a half months I
spent there, I got to know locals, shopkeepers, and people around me. Each day, I greeted them with a
“γεια σου!” and, when speaking to older people, respectfully said “γεια σας.” Often, I would shyly ask
“Τι κάνεις;” and their smiles, patience, and warm gazes made me feel that, even far from home, I truly
belonged. Even when I didn’t buy anything, I formed meaningful connections, connections I know I will
carry with me for life. I still have photos of some of them on my phone, small reminders of extraordinary
people.
Working as a hotel hostess, I discovered the reality behind hospitality: pressure, fast pace, responsibility,
and teamwork. The experience was intense and sometimes challenging. There were moments when
people were not understanding, and I struggled to remain calm and professional. There were even days
when I broke down and cried, though I knew I shouldn’t, especially in front of clients.
The surprise came when I least expected it. Strangers, customers I had never met, would hug me and tell
me to stay strong, that these difficult moments would help me grow. I was deeply moved by the
empathy, calm, and kindness that people could offer without knowing me. That’s when I realized that
humanity doesn’t need explanation or time, it sometimes appears exactly when you need it most.
Another unexpected joy was my relationship with children. I had never considered myself someone who
naturally connects with kids, yet that summer was different. Children came to me, hugged me, held my
hand, and offered me bracelets they had made. Their sincere affection moved me and revealed a side of
myself I hadn’t known before.
One of the most touching moments was with a family from France. The day before a little girl’s birthday,
her mother casually mentioned it to me. I remembered, and the next day, I prepared a small treat and a
candle, and together we sang “Happy Birthday” in French. The parents were deeply touched, told me I
had a big heart, and later gave me their contact details, inviting me to visit them in Paris. This moment showed me that kindness and attention can create genuine connections, even between people who have just met.
Beyond work, I traveled to Heraklion, Hersonissos, and Rethymno, discovering Crete’s diverse beauty. I
learned to swim, picked up Greek phrases, and later, in another Erasmus project, was able to
communicate in Greek, an achievement I found incredible. I also formed friendships with people from
around the world and received professional opportunities abroad. JobTrust opened doors I had never
imagined.
Looking back, the experience profoundly shaped me. I am more patient, empathetic, attentive to others,
and open to new experiences. That summer was not just about work, it was about life lessons, human
connections, and the courage to move forward even when it’s difficult. For me, JobTrust was not only a
professional opportunity but a transformative experience that I will always treasure and hope to repeat.
