Elena from Romania: A Summer in Crete – Between Challenges and Magic
My Erasmus experience in Greece, on the breathtaking island of Crete, was unforgettable – a mix of magical moments and challenges. I had the opportunity to work at a 5* well known hotel close to Heraklion, and this adventure gave me both valuable lessons and the chance to explore a fascinating world.
Crete, this sun-kissed island, feels like a piece of paradise. For someone like me, coming from a country where all four seasons are present, Crete feels like something out of a fairy tale. The warm weather, crystal-clear waters, towering mountains, and charming traditional villages make this island a place you could spend a lifetime exploring. I would gladly repeat this experience just to discover every hidden corner of Crete.
When I started working at the hotel, I faced several difficulties. I worked as a waitress, but my duties also included cleaning furniture, floors, and glasses every evening. The days were long and filled with hard work, but also funny moments and challenges that taught me patience. I answered calls, seated tourists at their tables, and made time to socialize with guests – even taking photos with some of them!
Above all, the biggest reward for me was meeting amazing people. I got to know wonderful individuals, both among my colleagues and the tourists, and I formed friendships that will surely last. I fondly remember learning a few Greek phrases, from "Kalimera" (good morning) and "Efkaristo" (thank you) to the infamous "Malaka" (used constantly by locals, either jokingly or seriously). It has been two months since my Erasmus mobility ended, and I deeply miss the delicious Greek food. The gyros there were simply unmatched, accompanied by creamy tzatziki and fresh greek salad. The seafood was a true delight, always fresh and expertly prepared, from grilled octopus to mouthwatering shrimp. I also can’t forget the olives, the golden melon, which was incredibly sweet and aromatic, unlike anything I’ve tasted before and the best in the world combination of feta and watermelon.
This experience, although full of contrasts, significantly improved my English and offered me valuable lessons in hospitality, adaptability, and communication. Despite living through both the highs and the lows, I feel grateful for this adventure. Crete will always remain the place where the sun never seems to set, and the memories will stay vivid in my heart forever.
Although I am no longer a student, I would like to express my gratitude to JobTrust for offering me the opportunity to gain such a valuable experience. I wholeheartedly recommend their services to anyone looking for a professional and enriching journey abroad!
